US President Trump to attend APEC Summit in Vietnam

US President Donald Trump will visit Vietnam this November to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, according to to US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Tillerson made the comments at a meeting during the two-day visit to the US by Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh on April 20.


During the visit, Minh also had talks with National Security Council Herbert Raymond McMaster and Finance Minister Steven Mnuchin.

At the meetings with Tillerson and National Security Council Herbert Raymond McMaster, Minh said Vietnam’s consistent policy of highly valuing and enhancing ties between the two countries, contributing to maintaining the peace, stability, co-operation and development.

The deputy PM noted that the two countries had big potential and should strengthen bilateral co-operation in many areas such as security and defence, education and training, science and technology. He also mentioned the addressing of the legacy of war. Among these, economic and trade co-cooperation needs to be the focus of bilateral relationship.

Minh conveyed an invite to US President Donald Trump to pay an official visit to Vietnam and attend the APEC Summit this November. The US secretary of state said that President Trump would visit Vietnam and attend the APEC Summit.

President Donald Trump also invited Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc to visit the US.

The US officials highlighted the importance of maintaining the peace, stability, security and maritime freedom in the South China Sea, reiterating US support for dealing with disputes by peaceful measures based on international laws, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 and Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and Code of Conduct.

Earlier, US Vice President Mike Pence also said that Trump would visit the Philippines and Vietnam in November for annual regional summits.

"The relationship between the United States and ASEAN is a strategic partnership. And under President Trump's leadership, the United States is already taking steps to strengthen our partnership with ASEAN and deepen our friendship," Pence added.

US President Trump has had indirect talks with Vietnam since his presidential election victory in November 2016.

In a letter sent to State President Tran Dai Quang late March, Trump expressed his wishes to promote co-operation on economics, trade, regional and international issues.
