The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAA) has proposed a VND19trn (USD848m) plan to upgrade Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat Airport.

Tan Son Nhat Airport is overloaded

The 25-million capacity airport welcomed 32 million passengers last year. The upgrade plan to 2020 with vision to 2030 aims to increase the airport's capacity to 45 million passengers a year and provide 85 parking for planes. More runways and another terminal will be opened with capacity to receive an additional 15 million passengers per year.

The estimated cost is over VND19.3trn (USD848m) and will come from various sources. The CAA nominated the Airports Corporation of Vietnam to be the project's investors and take care of the capital.

In addition, the CAA said the Ministry of Defence should be allowed to use reserve funds to military facilities and transfer the land to expand the civil airport. The CAA has proposed four projects to upgrade and expand the airport. If they are approved, the project to expand parking lot for planes will be started in September and completed in 2018.

The upgrade of the runways could last 16 months and cost VND600bn (USD26.3m) in the first phase.

The total area of Tan Son Nhat Airport will be expanded from 574 hectares to over 628 hectares by 2030.

In order to ease congestion near the airport, the CAA proposed to build a road from Hoang Van Thu Park to the airport, a flyover from Truong Street and expand several roads such as Hoang Hoa Tham Street.
