 >>  HCM City experiences horrific traffic jam
HCM City has taken measures to ease traffic pressure at 37 congestion spots across the southern metropolis.

The congestion spots include six in the centre, six near Tan Son Nhat International Airport, three at Cat Lai Port, eight at main routes into the city and 14 in other areas.

Roads leading near Cat Lai Port recently suffered a 13-hour traffic jam, the most serious and longest traffic jam in the city this year. According to drivers, it was due to a sharp increase in lorries driving freight to and from Cat Lai Port in District 2.

To deal with the problem, the construction of new roads at the intersection of Nguyen Thi Dinh and Vo Chi Cong Streets has been proposed. Phu My Bridge needs to be widened to ease frequent congestion.

Meanwhile, traffic jams at roads near Tan Son Nhat International Airport are expected to be relieved thanks to the completion of two flyovers by the end of this month.

Among the city’s 37 identified traffic points, 25 have seen remarkable improvement.

Traffic congestion is always a pressing issue in HCM City. Every day, the city has over 1,000 newly-registered vehicles, while the area devoted to traffic infrastructure remains unchanged.

By late March last year, HCM City had more than 7.5 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 6.77%, said the municipal Department of Transport. Additional millions of vehicles from other provinces also contribute to traffic congestion in the city every day.

The city is accelerating the progress of two metro lines and one bus rapid transit project, along with the construction of new bus terminals in outlying areas in an attempt to reduce traffic jams.
