Speaking with the media on July 18, director of the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Nguyen Van Kinh, said that they were receiving a sharp increase in the number of patients infected with dengue fever over the past two weeks.

"On average we are admitting 200-250 dengue fever patients a day," Kinh said. "We have opened three more wards to meet the demand.

Hanoi reported 1,200 new infection cases in a week from July 10-17, bringing the total to 5,300 so far this year according to the Hanoi Department of Health.

Most infections were spotted in the districts of Dong Da, Hoang Mai, Hai Ba Trung and Thanh Xuan, which have more ponds and lakes than the city centre.

While there is currently no specific vaccine or treatment for dengue, the department has directed medical units to prevent dengue fever from spreading, including raising local awareness and offering advice on how to take preventive measures.

The department has also used the most modern mosquito sprayer which can kill the insects from as far as 50 metres to help clean the environment.

Reports show that 15 people have died from dengue fever in Vietnam since the beginning of this year.
