The international highway project that runs through India, Thailand and Myanmar will be extended to Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The project will boost the infrastructure and commerce of the region.

During the ASEAN-India Expo and Forum held from August 2 to 5, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said developing infrastructure to complement logistics as well as water and air, water and land transport was extremely important to promote trade and investment. The infrastructure projects will especially help provide development opportunities to eastern India and ASEAN.

One of the key projects is the international highway that runs through India, Thailand and Myanmar announced last year. India then proposed to extend the highway to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The highway will help shorten the travel time from Mekong River to India, along with water transport development.

The proposal was approved as HCM City, Phnom Penh, Bangkok, Dawei and Chennai all have important positions in ASEAN. The highway will also boost the ASEAN–India Free Trade Area that came into effect in 2010.

India is becoming one of ASEAN's top partners. During 2015-2016 period, imports from India to ASEAN reached USD25.15bn and the exports from ASEAN to India was USD39.90bn.

Both ASEAN member countries and India are holding dialogue with Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea to finalise the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership which is hoped to boost the regional economic integration, including partial and full trade agreements.
