Thousands of rubber growers in the central province of Quang Binh have seen their rubber plantations damaged by Storm Doksuri.

According to authorities of Bo Trach District, around 7,000 hectares of local rubber trees were destroyed by the storm with Viet Trung Ltd. Co.’s farm and the communes of Phu Dinh and Tay Trach hardest hit. The district’s rubber areas were previously seriously affected by a storm in 2013.

Nguyen Thi Ha in Phu Dinh Commune said “All of my family’s effort to take care of the rubber farm have been wasted due to this typhoon. Besides our savings, we had to get bank loans for the two-hectare farm. So, how can we live?”

Le Van Khuyen, party secretary of Phu Dinh Commune, said that around 200 hectares of rubber trees in the commune have been ruined, pushing many households into the same situation.

Nguyen Van Minh, director of Viet Trung Ltd. Co., said that before the storm, his company collected 3.5 tonnes of rubber latex per day on average, showing positive signs of recovery after being hit by a storm in 2013.

The company recently was able to pay months-worth of back salaries for workers, but Storm Doksuri has brought them more challenges.

Le Ninh Ltd. Co. in Le Thuy District was also in the same situation as more than 300 hectares of rubber trees were totally destroyed.

Tran Cong Van, deputy director of the company said that they tried to protect the rubber trees; but the storm was so violent and their measures proved ineffective.

Nguyen Luong Binh, Chairman of the province’s trade union federation, asked local rubber companies to seek ways to ensure income for their workers.

The provincial trade union federation on September 16 presented 20 gifts worth VND500 million (USD22.7) for workers who have the most difficult condition in Viet Trung Ltd. Co. after the storm.
