The central province of Quang Nam’s Health Department has announced an outbreak of diphtheria in the local mountainous district of Nam Tra My.

Over the past two weeks, up to 12 diphtheria cases have been detected in Nam Tra My District. Among those, an eight-year-old primary school pupil died after being moved to Da Nang Obstetrics and Paediatrics Hospital. Meanwhile, the remaining patients are being provided with the treatment at the local health centres.

Vaccination against diphtheria in Quang Nam

A team from Nha Trang Paster Institute and Quang Nam Preventive Medicine Centre came to Nam Tra My District for the epidemic prevention and control.

However, up to 90% of the district’s population is from ethnic minority groups, so their awareness about disease prevention is very limited.

Nha Trang Pasteur Institute has planned to provide 30,000 vaccine doses for Tra Van and Tra Vinh communes as well as schools in Nam Tra My District.

The provincial Health Department will undertake a mass DPT vaccination campaign among kids aged one to four throughout Nam Tra My and neighbouring Bac Tra My districts. Meanwhile, those aged five to 40 in Tra Van commune will be given a Tetanus-diphtheria injection, while teachers and students at the school will get preventative drugs for the disease, according to the provincial health department.
