A 30-year-old woman in the northern province of Vinh Phuc has just delivered a 7.1 kilo baby boy which is Vietnam’s heaviest new born yet recorded.

The baby boy weighing 7.1 kilos was born in Vinh Phuc Province on October 14.

The mother, Nguyen Kim Lien, and her baby which was delivered via caesarean section at Vinh Tuong District Medical Centre on October 14, are now in stable condition, doctors at the centre said.

Lien said that she had a really normal and healthy pregnancy and did not eat much.

"I visited the doctor regularly to check the foetus and was also informed that my baby was a bit big," she said.

"When my due date came, I came to the medical centre to have a check-up again and the doctor said my baby would weigh around five kilos," she continued. "And we followed the doctors' advice to have a caesarean section. We were very surprised when told that the baby weighed 7.1 kilos."

The baby boy is held by his grandmother on October 15.

Doctor Vu Thi Bich Thuy, deputy head of the Obstetric Ward at Vinh Tuong Medical Centre said that she had performed a caesarean section to deliver a five-kilo new-born and this time was a new record.

"Although the mother and the baby are in good condition, they still need further supervision," the doctor said.

The father, Tran Van Quan, said that he was very happy to see his wife and baby in good health. Quan said that this is their second child. Their first son, who is now four years old, weighed 4.5 kilos at birth.

Tran Van Quan holds his newborn baby on October 15.

Quan's second son had made a new record as the heaviest baby in Vietnam recorded recently. In 2008, a baby girl in the central highlands province of Gia Lai was born at approximately 7 kilos. Two mothers in the central provinces of Danang and Quang Nam both gave birth to a 6.5-kilo baby girl in 2006 and 2014, respectively.
