Floods and landslides kill 72 in northern Vietnam

Recent floods and landslides in Vietnam have killed at least 72 people and left another 30 missing and 33 others injured, according to the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control.

The committee said that between October 9-12, many northern and northern central localities faced torrential rains, leading to the serious flooding, flash floods and then landslides.

By late October 15, the floods and landslides killed 72 people, including 23 in Hoa Binh Province, 16 in Thanh Hoa, 15 in Yen Bai, nine in Nghe An, six in Son La, two in Hanoi and one in Quang Tri.

The natural disasters left 30 missing, including 13 in Yen Bai, 10 in Hoa Binh, five in Thanh Hoa and two in Son La.

By the afternoon of October 15, 13 bodies out of the 18 people buried in a landslide in Hoa Binh Province’s Tan Lac District were found. Rescue forces have continued searching for the remaining people.

Up to 222 houses were ruined due to the floods and landslides and 49,402 others were submerged. Meanwhile, floods swept away 9,300 poultry and killed 290,523 birds.

By the afternoon of October 15, some areas in Thanh Hoa Province were still isolated due to the floods.

The affected localities have continued assessing the damage and applied for urgent aid from the government.
