Five drown, four missing on Red River

Five people have drowned and four others remained missing on the Red River in Lao Cai Province according to local authorities.

By 6.30 pm on Monday, five bodies have been recovered from the Red River in Bat Xat District, authorities in Lao Cai Province reported.

According to chairman of Nam Chac Commune People's Committee, Ly Nam Ky, the accident occurred when some workers from Bac Song Hong Trading Services Company were transporting goods on three steel boats to a Chinese partner on the early morning of March 11.

''At 6am, two boats returned safely," Ky said. "The last boat carrying nine workers had its engine die while on the way back. The nine workers decided to leave the boat and swim back but then drowned."

Rescue forces in Lao Cai Province have called for support from authorities in China's Yunnan Province to search for the four missing workers.
