Three fishermen killed in mystery explosion
Three fishermen were killed in an explosion in Quang Ngai Province after discovering a floating object on May 22.
According to Captain Nguyen Chin, it was at around 9 am when three fishermen found a strange object. "I was 700 metres away from them when I heard the explosion," Chin said. "Thang said they found a plastic object that was as large as a gas cylinder. When they pulled it into their boats, it exploded."
Nguyen Quang Tan and Duong Ngoc Quang died immediately. Nguyen Thang was able to grab a life buoy but due to severe injuries and blood loss, he died soon after.
Their bodies were brought to the mainland and returned to their families on May 22.
Pham Thi Huong, Vice Chairwoman of Ly Son District People's Committee, said they were still investigating the cause of the explosion. "We visited their families and gave them VND5.40m as support. We’ve also called for more donations for Tan's family who are the most financially needy," she said.
