Scrap collector killed by bomb

A man in Quang Ngai Province has been killed after trying to defuse 11 bombs for scrap.

Dinh Thi Thanh Huong, chairwoman of Son Ha District People's Committee, confirmed the information on June 15.


The incident occurred at 5 pm on June 14 when 51-year-old Dinh Van Trai was trying to defuse the bombs alone. When he got to the fifth one, the bomb exploded and killed him immediately. The authorities found six bombs that still haven't been defused at the scene.

"The military in Son Ha seized the bombs and will deal with them," Huong said.

Despite the effort from the authorities, many people in Quang Ngai Province still collect discovered bombs and mines.

Quang Ngai is one of the provinces that suffer the most from accidental explosions. According to the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, 1,400 were killed and 1,500 were injured since 1975. The province has collected 2,848 bombs and cleared 3,600 hectares out of 200,000 hectares.
