Hoi An turns rejects cable car project

Authorities of the UNESCO-recognised old town of Hoi An in the central province of Quang Nam have refused proposal to build a USD93 million cable car.

The NVN Company headquartered in Quang Nam Province proposed the construction of the 7-km cable car linking Thanh Ha Ward in Hoi An City and Duy Nghia Village in Duy Xuyen District.

According to the company, the cable car will help to shorten the route to seven kilometres instead of 13 kilometres by road. The work was allegedly intended to help boost Hoi An tourism development when visitors having views of the town and Thu Bon River.

However, Hoi An authorities were concerned that the project would not suit the local environment.

The cable car was planned to be located at the core area of biosphere reserves area of Hoi An, which obviously meant it would be very unlikely to be agreed to by the city’s authorities.

The authorities also noted the project would also occupy a large area of agricultural land which is estimated at more than 100 hectares.
