Hanoi authorities have prepared for the evacuation of 14,000 households in the outlying district of Chuong My due to rising floods.

According to Dinh Manh Hung, chairman of Chuong My District People’s Committee, the locality has faced heavy rains over the past recent days, causing high water level for local rivers, particularly the Bui River. The water at Bui River has been at highest warning level.

Up to 2,349 households in the 10 communes and towns in the district have been affected by the floods, leaving some villages isolated.

Tran Quang Hoai, the Director General of the Directorate of Disaster Management, Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, denied the rumour that the floods were due to the discharge of a reservoir in Hoa Binh Province.

“It is water from surrounding forests that are among the reasons for the floods. The same situation also occurred last year,” Hoai added.

Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung instructed the consolidation of dykes along the Bui River to avoid possible risks.

Hoai noted that the Red River Delta is now in flood season, so Hanoi needed to prepare response measures in urgent cases.

Chairman Chung urged Chuong My District’s communes to assign task forces to be on duty around the clock to protect people. The district needs to have preventive measures for the possible worst problems.

The city has provided more than 10,000 sandbags for Chuong My District to consolidate the Bui River dykes.
