The remains of a Vietnamese and Russian pilot who went missing during a flight 47 years ago have been found in Tam Dao, Thai Nguyen Province.

A piece of the aircraft was found in Tam Dao

According to the Ministry of Defence, initial reports show that the plane crashed into the side of Tam Dao Mountain, between Thai Nguyen and Vinh Phuc provinces, and created a three-metre deep and six-metre wide crater. The two pilots went missing during training on April 30, 1971.

The search was carried out last year after the granddaughter of Yuri Poyarkov expressed a desire to find more information about her missing grandfather. On February 25, a piece of the aircraft was found and confirmed to belong to a Mig-21U.

On September 26, a search team led by Senior Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Trung Thanh found the scene of the accident 130 metres away from the top of Tam Dao Mountain. Large amounts of debris from the planes and marks were left on the nearby trees.

Thai Nguyen Military Headquarters issued a search team of 19 members led by Colonel Ngo Hong Thai to survey the area and locate the remains. Two days later, two remains were found 20 metres apart along with a glove, a belt and parts of the clothes.

This could be the remains of Vietnamese pilot Cong Phuong Thao and Air Force Captain Poyarkov Yuri Nikolaevich from the Soviet Union.

The authorities are carrying out DNA tests.
