A woman in Hanoi has died following having a diet for two months.

The 59-year woman in Hai Ba Trung District was taken to Bach Mai hospital on January 3 exhausted with a serious stomachache.

Tests showed that she suffered from severe and high acidosis along with elevated liver enzymes. The patient was immediately given a ventilator and dialysis, but she died four days later.

According to the woman’s family, she was diagnosed with diabetes two years ago. She used medicines based on doctors’ prescriptions. But around two months ago, she suddenly stopped taking the medicines and turned to a diet. Since then, she only ate brown rice, roasted sesame and salt and milk made from nuts along with mediation.

As a result, she lost up to seven kilos for two months, while her belly became swollen.

Examinations showed that her belly contained a large amount of fluid and some tumours.

Earlier, another woman in Hanoi was also hospitalised due to heart problems following the same diet for 41 days. Luckily, she recovered.

Professor Mai Trong Khoa, former director of Bach Mai Hospital, said that lots of people are using diets for disease treatment, including cancer. However, this posed obvious dangers to their health.

Khoa himself has never seen anyone whose cancer could be cured by taking diets.
