British pilot infected with Covid-19 in worsened health

A British pilot who has been infected with Covid-19 has suddenly experienced a worsened health condition after 20 days of treatment in Vietnam.

The information was given by the HCM City Department of Health this morning, April 6.

The 43-year old pilot or the 91st patient in Vietnam is staying at HCM City Hospital for Tropical Diseases. 

Dr. Nguyen Van Vinh Chau, director of the hospital said that he has been facing high fever since being hospitalised with lung damage. Since Monday, the patient has been using a ventilator, instead of some oxygen methods earlier, including oxygen mask.

The hospital worked with Cho Ray Hospital and agreed to use Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation method for him. A team of experts from Cho Ray Hospital came to the HCM City Hospital for Tropical Diseases for help with this technique.

On April 3, the patient still tested positive to the virus through Real-time RT-PCR method. His viral load remains high.

Before affecting with the virus, the pilot worked for national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines. On February 8, he was a passenger of a flight of Vietnam Airlines from London to Vietnam.

Between March 13-18, he stayed in HCM City and visited local restaurants, including Buddha Bar in District 2. On March 17, he had a cough and a day later he went to the HCM City Hospital for Tropical Diseases for medical check-ups where he was diagnosed positive to the virus.

Following his case, 18 other people, including who contacted with him, also tested positive to the virus. To date, HCM City has confirmed 53 Covid-19 cases with 22 among those discharged from hospital.

Meanwhile, other patients are in stable health condition.
