More than 300 parents gathered at the Australian International School, Ho Chi Minh City (AIS) on Tuesday to protest against the school's high fees during its closure due to Covid-19 prevention efforts.

Parents gathered at the Australian International School, Ho Chi Minh City on May 5 to protest against the school's high fees.

A parent said that they decided to come to the school after many of their letters sent to the school's managers had not been replied to.

Despite allowing parents to enter a meeting room, the school managers failed to show up to meet with the parents.

Deputy head of the Ho Chi Minh City's Department of Education and Training, Le Hoai Nam came to meet with the parents. The official said that they had issued regulations on fees charged at local public schools during the school closing period for virus prevention, but private schools would have to negotiate with parents on the fees.

"This is the first time we’ve faced such a situation so schools and parents should work together to find the most suitable charges for this time", Nam said.

On April 21, over 300 parents signed in a letter calling for help from the municipal people's committee and education department to get the school return the study fees they had paid for the 2019-2020 school year.

The letter said that on April 6 when the school was being closed for Covid-19 prevention, they sent an announcement on the study fee for the 2020-2021 school year.

When parents asked whether the school would return the study fees for the 2019-2020 school year when they were closing, the school replied that they would return 20 per cent for pre-school students, 12 per cent for primary, and 5 per cent for other levels, which parents rejected.

On May 2, AIS sent a new announcement which said that they would deduct 70 per cent study fees for primary, secondary and high school levels while studying online during the closure.

However, the parents rejected the 30 per cent of study fee for studying online. They said that the school provided only a few online lessons while the fees were too high.

AIS is among the most expensive schools in Ho Chi Minh City with the highest study fee for the 2019-2020 school year is VND646 million (USD28,086).
