A tropical depression has been forecasted to appear in the East Sea and is likely to become a storm to hit the central region of Vietnam in some days to come, warned Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong.

At the government’s meeting on Monday, Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong said that over the past two weeks the central region faced two storms with the historical flooding, causing 102 deaths and 26 missing. Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Nam have been hardest-hit with 48, 27 and 11 fatalities respectively.

Houses in Quang Binh flooded

By Monday evening, up to 91,000 people from Ha Tinh to Thua Thien-Hue provinces had been evacuated; while more than 166,000 houses in Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Quang Tri had been submerged.

At present, the water level at all reservoirs in the central region is very high, which poses dangers for central localities.

Cuong added that a tropical depression would develop into a storm which would make landfall in the central region this weekend. “We have to make preparations for this if not it would be a tragedy,” the minister noted.
