An English training centre in Ho Chi Minh City has suspended its classes after a teacher was confirmed to have been infected with coronavirus which is the first community transmission case in Vietnam in 88 days.

The Key English Centre announced on Monday afternoon that they would close all their facilities in Ho Chi Minh City for two weeks from November 30 to December 14.

"Our teaching activities in Ho Chi Minh City will be temporarily suspended for Covid-19 prevention after a teacher here has been confirmed to carry the virus," the centre announced.

The 32-year-old male English teacher was reported on November 30 by the health ministry as the first community transmission case in Vietnam after 88 days.

According to the ministry's report, the man had close contact with a Vietnam Airlines' male attendant who was then announced to have coronavirus on November 29.

During his quarantine time in Ho Chi Minh City from November 14-18, the attendant had close contact with his colleague who was then confirmed as a Covid-19 patient.

However, he later tested negative for the virus two consecutive times and was allowed to self-quarantine at home.

During his stay at home, he had close contact with his mother and two friends including the English teacher.

The English teacher was teaching at two facilities of the Key English Centre in District 10 and Tan Binh District. He had also visited a cafe and a karaoke bar in District 10.

Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City have brought 38 people who had close contact with the English teacher to quarantine areas for monitoring and viral testing. As many as154 others are also being monitored for virus prevention.
