Speaking at a meeting on June 28, Chairman of HCM City People's Committee, Duong Anh Duc, said that social distancing regulations would continue to be applied in the city until further notice.

This is the third time that social distancing measures have been applied in Ho Chi Minh City since May 31 according to Prime Ministerial Directive 15.

Under the directive, gatherings or meetings with more than 20 people in one room, or a gathering of more than 10 people outside office buildings, schools, and hospitals are prohibited.

People, especially 60 years old and above, are advised to stay home unless for essential purposes and should keep a distance of at least 2 metres during contact.

Non-essential businesses and services will remain closed, while travel from virus-hit areas to other localities is restricted.

Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City admitted that the virus fight in the city is facing great challenges as more chains of transmission of unknown origin have been uncovered, and many cases are asymptomatic.

As of Tuesday morning, Vietnam had reported 16,136 Covid-19 infection cases. The outbreak has so far spread to 48 cities and provinces nationwide with Bac Giang Province and Ho Chi Minh City being hardest hit.
