Doctors in Ho Chi Minh City have helped more Covid-19 patients get timely access to oxygen supply amid rising demand and equipment shortages at local hospitals.

Doctor Phan Trung Hieu and Doctor Vo Nguyen Bao recently moved from Cho Ray Hospital to Field Hospital 6 to help treat Covid-19 patients. They have just successfully attached multiple gauges to one oxygen cylinder, which is partly mitigating the shortage of oxygen distribution equipment and personnel at local hospitals.

According to the doctors, they have enough oxygen but are facing a shortage of oxygen gauges and personnel. Each cylinder is designed for just one patient, but they have found a way that helps five to 10 patients share one cylinder.

"The idea came from the large demand for oxygen from Covid-19 patients," Doctor Hieu shared. "We made it following the oxygen supply system from our home fish tanks."

Besides solving the equipment shortage, this has also helped reduce time, manpower, he said.

"Oxygen is vital in Covid-19 treatment," the doctor said. "Patients may worsen quickly if not getting oxygen quickly enough. Therefore this solution helps us a lot in our treatment activities, especially when we are facing personnel shortage."
