The Ministry of Health has just asked Binh Duong Provincial Health Department to investigate a case where a local man was reported to have died at home after being refused by five hospitals.

The director of Binh Duong Provincial Health Department was asked to urgently carry out an investigation and issue appropriate punishments to concerned individuals and organisations if violations are found.

The ministry has also asked all hospitals in Binh Duong to actively participate in Covid-19 fighting activities while still carrying out normal health check-ups and treatment. Each hospital must be ready to have at least 40 percent of beds for Covid-19 patients.

The move came after a 57-year-old man was taken to five hospitals in the southern province and were all refused and then died at home on August 14.

According to the man's daughter, her father had a stomach ache and started vomiting on the evening of August 13. She called ambulances but there was no one available. Then a neighbour helped take him to Di An City Healthcare Centre on their truck. But the centre refused to admit him, saying that they were treating Covid-19 patients.

Then the man was taken to Ngoc Hong Clinic. He was given viral testing and was negative for Covid-19. But after a health check-up, doctors here said that his condition was serious and transferred him to a higher-level hospital.

The family continued to take him to three other hospitals including Military Hospital 4, An Phu General Hospital, and Nam Anh Private Clinic but were all refused.

The man was finally brought home and died at 1 am the next morning.

The Binh Duong Provincial Committee on August 14 sent an urgent document to the health department asking local hospitals not to refuse any patients in emergency.

Di An City had also held a meeting with representatives from the five hospitals on August 15 and the hospitals admitted their wrongdoings in the incident.

The ministry asked Binh Duong health authorities to send a detailed report on the case by August 17.

Binh Duong is now the second biggest epicentre in the country after Ho Chi Minh City. On Monday the province reported 2,522 infections, bringing the total number of patients to 46,501.

The province now has five field hospitals and 16 treatment facilities for Covid-19 patients with a total of over 17,600 beds.
