Storm Lionrock to hit Vietnam's central region

The Storm Lionrock tropical depression has strengthened into a storm that is forecasted to hit some central coastal provinces of Vietnam with heavy rain and squalls.

According to the National Centre for Hydrometeorology Forecasting, as of 1 am on October 8, the Storm Lionrock was centred at the northwest of the Paracel Islands with wind power of 60-75 kilometres per hour.

It is forecasted that the storm will move north-northwest at a speed of about 10 kilometres per hour and may gain in strength. By 1 am on October 9, the storm will have been centred southeast of China's Hainan Island with windpower of between 60-90 kilometres per hour.

Lionrock will continue to move west-northwest in the next 48 hours into the Gulf of Tonkin. By 1 am on October 10, the storm will have been centred at some 120 kilometres southeast of the Bach Long Vi Island with windpower of between 60-90 kilometres per hour.

Under the effect of Lionrock, strong winds prevail over the coast of the Paracel and the Spratly Islands.

On Friday, heavy rain associated with Lionrock is affecting some central and central highlands provinces including Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, and Kon Tum with estimated rainfall of between 50-120 mm.

The northern and central northern region may also expect heavy rains and flooding from October 12.
