According to the official, more than 1,500 schools in the city are being used as quarantine areas for Covid-19 prevention. The quarantine activities are expected to end in November so the schools could be prepared to welcome students back.

Hieu said that the city was now organising online studying but this was also facing various challenges due to technical and management issues.

"At present, more than 30,000 students have been stuck at other localities as a result of the social distancing rules," he said. "Of the number 26,000 are studying online while over 5,000 have been admitted to local schools."

The official expressed hopes that the plan for reopening schools would go smoothly as the pandemic was being brought under control.

"At present, we are considering reopening two schools in the island commune of Thanh An in Can Gio District from October 11 as the area has become free of Covid-19 for a long time," he said.
