Vietnamese visitors to Japan keep rising

Japan welcomed around 55,800 Vietnamese tourists in the first two months of this year, the highest for a single month, according to statistics of the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO).

The increase has been attributed to the long Lunar New Year holiday and the depreciation of the Japanese Yen, which has encouraged travel companies to design attractive products at affordable prices for the middle-class customer segment.

The number of Vietnamese travellers to Japan is forecasted to continue growing as the cherry blossom season begins to flourish in March and April.

Between January and February, more than 105,000 Vietnamese tourists came to Japan, up 40 percent from the same period in 2019. Vietnam was listed in the top ten markets with the highest number of visitors to Japan during this time.

The Japanese tourism sector has witnessed strong growth after the Covid-19 pandemic. In the first two-month phase, Japan served 5.5 million international visitors, up 3 percent against 2019.

Deputy Director General of the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism Ha Van Sieu said that Japan was one of the top foreign destinations for Vietnamese holiday-makers, while Vietnam is also popular with Japanese tourists.

Yoshida Kenji, head of the representative office in Vietnam revealed that the office will carry out measures to increase the number of Japanese visitors to Vietnam in 2024. The office will also work with organisations and individuals in the industry to implement the Japanese government’s three new tourism strategies, sustainable tourism development, increased tourist spending and regional attraction to promote tourism between the two countries.
