Filipino crew member dies in labour accident off Danang coast

A Filipino crew member of a cargo ship died after a bad fall while the ship was running off the Vietnamese central coastal city of Danang.



A crew member of the Asteris ship dies off Danang coast.

The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre announced on Thursday morning that they transferred the body of a Filipino crew member to authorities in Danang City.

According to the centre, they received a call for help from the Asteris ship of Marshall Island nationality at 8.28 pm on April 17, informing that a crew member was unconscious after a fall which had badly injured his head.

"The Asteris cargo ship was running from Vietnam's northern Quang Ninh Province to Indonesia," the centre said. "The accident occurred while the ship was 85 nautical miles from Danang City’s Son Tra Peninsula. When receiving their call for help, we gave them first aid instructions and immediately sent a rescue team who arrived at the vessel at midnight the same day. However, the crewman had died from serious head injuries."

The victim's body was brought ashore in Danang City at 4.18 am on April 18 and transferred to local authorities.
