Vietnam gained a year-on-year increase of 99.5 percent to 26.4 million USD in tuna export value to Japan for the first quarter of this year, said the VietnamAssociation of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

The association said the increase in tuna export value was due to Japan 's increasing demand on tuna while output of tuna in Japan has reduced. Last year, Japan consumed 270,000 tonnes of tuna and must import 12,000 tonnes for domestic consumption.

Tuna export to Japan is expected to increase further by this year end, it said, so processors should improve quality of products and the state should have policy on encouraging farmers to rear tuna fish.
