PMU Director suspended amid allegations of corruption

Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of Vietnam’s Railway Project Management Unit (PMU), under suspicion of illegally accepting bribes worth VND16 billion in connection with railway projects, has been suspended pending further investigation.

The decision immediately followed a meeting of leaders of the Vietnam Railways and the Project Management Unit on March 23 in which they heard preliminary testimony related to allegations that Japan Transportation Consultants, Inc. (JTC) had tendered bribes to a number of Vietnam officials, including Hieu.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Ngoc Dong on March 24 contacted the Japanese embassy and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Hanoi to call for joint investigations into the matter..

Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang has also been asked to set up investigation teams and expand the scope of investigations to all projects that JTC have been involved in, especially its participation in railway projects.

Initial reports on the matter will be announced at a meeting on the afternoon of March 24.
