HCM City authorities have vowed to eliminate all local unlicensed markets within July this year as a way to deal with food of unclear origin.

According to Le Minh Hai, deputy head of the city Food Safety Management Board, many unlicensed food services were operating in the city. Meanwhile, lots of unlicensed markets have been emerging, selling produce of unknown origin.

Tran Vinh Tuyen, vice chairman of the municipal people’s committee, said that the city has aimed to stop the business of unclear origin food. The committee has instructed all municipal districts to eliminate temporary markets within next month which are clues for the circulation of unsafe food.

Tuyen also asked the city Department of Industry and Trade to arrange mobile shops to sell safe food and consumer goods at residential areas and export processing zones. Local wholesale markets, shops and supermarkets have been requested not to sell all products of unknown origin from July.

Tuyen suggested that all business units which fail to meet food safety requirements should have their operation license revoked.

The HCM City Department of Industry and Trade reported that there are around 110 streets in the city with unlicensed wet markets and street vendors selling food of unknown origin and quality.

The markets are found mostly in the districts of Go Vap, Binh Thanh, Thu Duc, Binh Chanh, Binh Tan and Tan Phu.

In March this year, the Food Safety Management Board of HCM City officially made its debut at a ceremony on March 11, making the city become the first locality in the country piloting food safety management by only one agency.
