Uber Vietnam started raising its fares in Ho Chi Minh City from today, August 24.

The last price adjustment Uber made was in November 2016, when it raised fares from VND5,000 (22 US cents) to VND7,000 per kilometre in HCM City and to VND7,500 per kilometre in Hanoi. For each trip, Uber deducts 25% of the fares from its drivers.

Up to more than four million people have used Uber services in Vietnam

According to a representative from Uber Vietnam, from August 24, UberX’s fares will increase from VND7,000 per kilometre to VND8,500 (37 US cent) per kilometre in HCM City. Meanwhile, the minimum fares and cancellation fees will still be VND15,000.

Uber Vietnam said that it will also adjust fares in Hanoi at a later date to support its drivers.

Traditional taxi firms in Vietnam have complained about the low fares offered by Grab and Uber in Vietnam, stirring an unfair competition in the market. So raising the fares by Uber Vietnam is among moves to narrow the fare gap. Uber has also hiked their fares in many countries such as Australia and Hong Kong.

To date, up to more than four million people have used Uber services in Vietnam since the company entered the country three years ago.
