Up to 270 tonnes of Chinese potatoes have been still detected at Da Lat farm produce market despite efforts to tighten control the origin and quality of the products.

The potatoes were found at seven stalls at the market on September 15.

The stall owners were requested to remove the potatoes from the market to prevent them from being disguised as Da Lat’s genuine product for sales.

The traders agreed on the instruction, but they said that the amount was too big, so it would cost them at least VND10 million (USD454.54) for the urgent transportation and storage.

They asked for a delay, but this was turned down by local authorities. If the traders did not obey the regulations, their potatoes would be destroyed in some days to come.

On August 21, police in Da Lat found a large number of Chinese potatoes repackaged as Da Lat farm produce at the market for being sold at high prices.

Sellers used a machine to wash Chinese potatoes. After being washed, potatoes will be covered with earth from the Central Highlands region and then packaged into bags and labelled with stamps issued by the market management board.

Chinese potatoes are often bought at VND7,000 per kilo, but when being disguised as the Da Lat produce, they are priced at up to VND20,000 per kilo in the market.

Following the case, market management said that cameras would be installed at the market to supervise the origin and quality of the products.
