The project has a total investment of VND5.8 trillion (USD252.17 million), including VND310 billion from the state budget.

The project will be divided into two phases. The first phase will focus on developing the airport into a 4C rating to serve around 2.2 million passengers per year by 2046 and 5,600 tonnes of cargo by 2042.

The second phase would prioritise underground infrastructure investment and the passenger terminal expansion to raise the capacity to five million passengers per year by 2047 and 25,500 tonnes of cargo per year by 2059.

The project is aimed to meet the higher travel demand as well as serve rescue activities of the province of the central region.

In 2020, Quang Tri welcomed two million visitors, mostly those who came to sites such as Truong Son Martyrs' Cemetery, Quang Tri Citadel and the Catholic church at La Vang.
