HCM City authorities opened branded jewellery streets in District 5 on April 27 in a bid to honour jewellers and attract tourists.

About 200 metres of Nhieu Tam Street and 350 metres of Nghia Thuc Street were chosen for the project.

This is the first step to develop the goldsmithing streets and encourage tourists to spend more. Four stops will be prepared to greet tourists and introduce the jewellery making processes to tourists.

"Visitors can buy gold and silver products and also observe the making process. We also upgraded some attractions such as Van Phat Pagoda and Le Chau Congregation where the
ancestors of goldsmiths are worshipped. Ben Thanh Tourists and Vietravel firms have developed tours that incorporated those destinations," said Nguyen Vo Xuan Ky, chief of District 5's committee office.

Le Thi Loan, head of District 5's Finance Department said they would carry out regular inspections in order to ensure the quality of the jewellery,. The logo of the street is placed in front of each shop to support the brand.

A security team was set up to patrol and ensure the safety of the visitors as well as the sellers and their goods. The activities on the streets are also monitored by various cameras. Le Thi Ngoc Dung, chairwoman of District 5 then publicised her mobile phone number.

The old jewellery area in HCM City has many features of a traditional village. It was set up in the late 1980s and covers Nhieu Tam, Nghia Thuc and Bui Huu Nghia streets. As of now, about 55 firms and traders set up shops here.

Owner of Phu Thanh Shop said most of their customers were wholesale buyers. He hoped the shops would receive more recognition from the public.
