HCM City’s backpacker street to be pedestrianised

HCM City’s most popular backpacker road of Bui Vien would be turned into a pedestrian street next month.

Bui Vien Street in District 1 will be reserved exclusively for pedestrians from 7 pm until 2 am on Saturdays and Sundays from July 15.

Nguyen Thi thu Huong, vice chairman of District 1 People’s Committee, said that around VND10 billion (USD454,000) will be invested to pave the street. The work, which will be carried out at night to avoid causing urban disorder, is scheduled to finish by late September this year.

Huong also said that local authorities have considered a design for the street’s welcoming gate as well as the issue of a code of conduct for the street. Stages for live music performances are being put up along the street.

La Quoc Khanh, deputy director of the HCM City Department of Tourism, said that training courses on tourism and legal knowledge will be held for businesses and households on Bui Vien Street.

Bui Vien along with some other streets De Tham and Do Quang Dau in Pham Ngu Lao Ward is a the city’s major attraction attracts around 500 tourists every day and even 1,200 on its best days, with the majority being foreigners.

Bui Vien pedestrian street will have free wifi and WC.

The city’s Nguyen Hue street was pedestrianised last year.
