Young artist Nguyen Xuan Lam has started a project reinterpreting Dong Ho and Hang Trong folk prints using modern techniques.

The 25-year-old artist uses graphics software to give the traditional art a contemporary look. With his calendars, notebooks, bookmarks, and more, folk painting patterns have attracted many youngsters.

The artist said that it took him nine months to complete the project in December 2016.

Dong Ho and Hang Trong folk paintings have been popular among Vietnamese art lovers for centuries. However, they, as well as many others genres, are disappearing as many artists have given up traditional arts.

Lam first introduced his collection at an exhibition in Hanoi early January 2018 and got good feedback from art lovers and critics.

Lam said that he was happy that his works are getting support from the public. "I've received some proposals for co-operation to bring folk paintings to more exhibitions and workshops,” he added.
