A magnificent wedding party by an Indian billionaire couple, which was held in seven days from March 3-10 at the 5-star resort JW Marriott on the southern island of Phu Quoc, was seen as a good start for the country's tourism sector as more similar events are underway.

At a press conference held on March 8 by the Kien Giang provincial authorities to announce the wedding, the first of its kind in Vietnam, Deputy Head of Kien Giang provincial Department of Information and Communications, Le Van Chuyen, said that the event was an opportunity for Kien Giang to promote its tourism, especially wedding party tourism, a newly developed type of tourism in the world.

According to the official, the invitation to the Indian couple, Kaabia Grewal and Rushang Shah, was made on a working trip by the Kien Giang provincial leaders to India in late 2018.

"In order for the bride and groom's families to accept the invitation to hold the wedding in Phu Quoc island, the Vietnamese Ambassador to India Pham Sanh Chau played an active role," Chuyen said.

Vietnamese Ambassador to India Pham Sanh Chau added that such events also helped enhance diplomatic relations between Vietnam and India. It was also an opportunity to expand relations between the two countries.

Nguyen Viet Thong, Deputy Head of Kien Giang Department of External Affairs, shared that, in order for the Indian couple's wedding to be successful, the locality had made efforts to create the best conditions for them. The Vietnamese Embassy in India and the agencies in Kien Giang have worked with multiple ministries and functional agencies so that the bride and groom's families could invite a total of 700 guests as well as transport dozens of tonnes of goods, outfits, jewellery and props from India straight to Phu Quoc Island.

Besides 700 guests from India, some 225 other people arrive from 10 countries to join in the wedding party

Director of Kien Giang Provincial Department of Tourism, Bui Quoc Thai, highly appreciated the event for its big contribution to the local tourism's sector.

"We only received 1,800 Indian tourists to Phu Quoc in 2018 but 900 people came from India during the four days of the wedding," Thai said, adding that that would be a good start for similar events held here in the coming time.

Talking with Dtinews, Pawan Mirchandani from the organiser of the event, India-based Horizon company, revealed that following the wedding of Kaabia Grewal and Rushang Shah, they had received many orders from wealthy Indian couples who wanted to organise their weddings in Vietnam.
