The event is being hosted by Urban Sketcher Hanoi as one of a series of activities to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the capital’s Liberation Day (October 10) and to introduce its beauty to international friends.

As many as 350 professional and amateur painters, architects, and those into sketching are involved, from six to 70 years old from 20 countries and territories such as France, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and elsewhere.

Over the course of the four days, artists are divided into ten groups to sketch the Old Quarter, the tourist and commercial center of Hanoi, and to sketch other popular images such as the Hanoi Opera House, Emperor Ly Thai To’s Statue and Garden, St Joseph’s Cathedral, Ngoc Son Temple, Ba Kieu Temple, Dong Xuan Market, and Quan Chuong Gate, among others.

Within the framework of the event are six workshops, ten hands-on drawing sessions, and three experience-sharing workshops with renowned Asian artists in urban sketching with different styles, such as Kiah Kiean Chng (Malaysia), Elena Kilimova (Russia-Hong Kong), Alvin Mark Tan, Don Low and Tia Boon Sim (Singapore), Darman Angir (Indonesia), Arkar Myo (Myanmar), Akri Mark (the Philippines), Supmanee Chai and Pramote K (Thailand), Khoo Cheang Jin (Malaysia), and Binh Chu, Thuy Duong and Dinh Hai (Vietnam).

In addition to the main activity of drawing sketches, participants are also introduced to Hanoi’s typical culture, such as wearing “ao dai” (the traditional dress) and conical hats as well as enjoying food specialties such as “pho”, “bun cha” (grilled pork with noodles and fish sauce), and green rice flake cake, among others.

The sketches will be exhibited at the closing ceremony on October 6 at 13-15 Le Thanh Tong Street in Hoan Kiem district.

Urban Sketcher Hanoi is a member of the World Urban Sketchers Group. Founded in 2016 with nearly 400 members, they together sketch to retain beautiful images of the city’s landscape, heritage, and life in the context of it changing day-by-day from urbanization.

AsiaLink is a network of urban sketching groups from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan (China), Thailand, and Vietnam, etc. Every year since 2012, the group has organized annual regional urban sketch meetings called Asia Link Sketchwalks (ALSW), in different cities across Asia. These ALSW events have drawn creative artists, architects, designers, and sketchers of different ages from Asia and around the world to visit and sketch the host countries.
