Vice Chairman of HCM City Tran Vinh Tuyen worked with the city Department of Tourism and related agencies on February 9 to discuss tourism activities in 2017.

Bui Hoang Ta Vu, deputy head of the Department of Tourism said they had raised the goal to welcome 5.6 million visitors this year to six million, an increase of 15.39% on last year.

The city will introduce urban waterway tours on Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe and Tau Hu-Ben Nghe routes. Eco-tour on the waterways that also connect with District 9, Can Gio and Cu Chi districts would also be offered to tourists.

Several firms have asked for permission to open restaurant boats on the canals.

Tuyen said the goal to receive six million visitors could be met as the Politburo had confirmed that tourism would be one of Vietnam's key economic sectors. The Department of Tourism must focus on building specific strategies and quickly implement the inland waterway tourism plan.

Several ideas such as converting Bui Vien into a pedestrian street and organising tours to wholesale markets in the city are being discussed.

"Every department, district and ward must work with the Department of Tourism to create their own feature products. One of our weaknesses is the lack of co-operation and this needs to be changed," Tuyen said.
