The authorities in various cities and provinces in the central region have discussed the potential of river tourism in their areas.

Danang People's Committee have issued a plan to develop river tourism during the 2019-2021 period. They called for investments into ports, wharves and boats at tourism destinations. At first, they will upgrade Han River Port and Thu Thanh River Port. The city authorities will temporarily let businesses open services like picnics and call for investments to build new tour boats that can cruise overnight in Danang Bay.

Son Tra Peninsula will invest in coral reef diving, and tours to traditional villages where tourists can shop and enjoy local food. Dao Dang Cong Trung, director of Danang Ocean Tour said this might be a breakthrough to boost the city's tourism sector and local authorities should have firms with administrative procedures to get permits to build boats more quickly.

Hoi An is the best in exploiting river tourism in Quang Nam Province. However, Nguyen Van Son, vice chairman of Hoi An People's Committee, said the city's potential was still untapped. Hoi An and My Son Sanctuary are linked by Thu Bon River so if they can exploit this route perfectly, it will bring in huge profits for the city. The authorities are calling for investment into this route.

Meanwhile, services on the famous Huong River in Hue City are also considered weak. "Tours on the Huong River are boring and lack attractive services and products," said Nguyen Khanh Toan, a tour guide in Hue.

Nguyen Van Phuc, deputy director of Thua Thien-Hue Department of Tourism said they were working with a South Korean firm on the problem. Two other firms in Hue are also planning to open kayak tours on Ngu Ha River.

In Quang Tri Province, Nguyen Van Chien, deputy director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said Thach Han River had the most potential for tourism development that connects historical landmarks. The route can start from Ba Long base to Tram Hydropower Dam to Quang Tri battlefield and memorial area of the late General Secretary Le Duan. The route can continue to Cua Viet beach and Con Co Island.

"Several investors have shown interests in river tourism. I'm sure that tour routes to historical sites will bring in more services that attract more visitors," he said.

In a recent attempt to open more services to the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Oxalis Adventure Tours Company was allowed to open a tour route to visit Son River and nearby traditional villages. Nguyen Chau A, Oxalis's director, said even though the trip was short, it would be effective in introducing tourists to the beautiful landscape of the area and would be attractive to new visitors and those who hadn’t visited Quang Binh Province for years.
