Training centres for university entrance exams, in the past crowded with students as testing time neared, have been losing ground to online courses.

Training centres for university entrance exams have seen few students coming to register.

As internet access becomes easier, especially for those living in urban areas, more students have been finding online courses as an effective way to study.

Nguyen Quang Duy, from Binh Thanh District in HCM City, said that he will not register at a training centre to study for the upcoming university entrance exam.

“I am getting tutoring from some of my former teachers. On top of that I'm taking lessons on the internet. For me it is just as good as attending a training centre," he said.

Another former high school student from HCM City, Dieu Huong, said that training centres offer the same exercises that she can do at home online.

Wan of brick and mortar

While training centres in HCM City are open their doors in expectation students filing in to register as they have in the past, the atmosphere has been muted in comparison to recent years.

The centres around the University of Agriculture and Forestry and the University of Technical Education in Thu Duc District or around Binh Thanh, Go Vap districts, have seen few students coming to register.

The average number of students attending classes in these areas averages around 30 to 40 students per class, while some have only three or four.

Some centres have launched promotional programmes with discounted fees, assistance for lodging and promises to help average students pass the exam. However these programmes have not been very effective.

Digital education

Not only do students find studying online to be more convenient, many find internet classes, a number of which are designed and administered by highly qualified teachers, to be very helpful.

According to Ha Huy Vu, a third-year student at the HCM City University of Economics, said that after graduating from high school he studied online for the university entrance exam and passed.

“Studying online makes it possible for students from the countryside, like me, to save time and money. There are a lot of courses to choose from, and even the payment can be done easily online," Vu said.
