Thousands of native English speakers will come to Vietnam for teaching

The Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) has recently signed an agreement on English teaching cooperation with the Australia's English Language Centre (ELC).

As a result, ELC will be responsible for providing native English teachers from the UK, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the US under the “Teaching and discovering Vietnam” Programme.

These teachers will work in schools ranging from primary to tertiary education for apparently just VND6 million (USD287.5) per month.

The management board of Vietnam’s Foreign Language Project through 2020 will coordinate with ELC for the training, management and allocation of these teachers to specific schools of demand.

Nguyen Ngoc Hung, head of the project told DTiNews that the two sides will meet and discuss how to implement the project in the time to come.

“Such cooperation is expected to help improve English capacity for Vietnamese students and improve English communication skills for Vietnamese teachers,” Hung noted.

According to him, the MoET has required the ELC to train qualified teachers of English before sending them to Vietnam.

Between 300 and 500 such teachers will come to Vietnam annually for language teaching. Each of them will provide 25 classes per week.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Vinh Hien said, “The participation of thousands of native English teachers together with advanced language teaching software would significantly foster the government’s to realise its Foreign Language Project through 2020.”

The ministry kicked off a project on January 18 to set up local foreign language centres which were designed to meet increasing demand for foreign language training in the country.

These centres must renovate their education programmes and methods; upgrade their teaching and learning facilities as well as establish a standard environment for English usage.

These centres would be located at Thai Nguyen University, Hue University, Danang University, University of Languages and International Studies under the Vietnam National University – Hanoi, and HCM City University of Education.
