Vietnam also secured one silver and two bronze medals, which went to Le Thi Hong Hoa from Hanoi, Nguyen Ngoc Minh Hai from Quang Ninh province and Nguyen Dac Hieu from Thanh Hoa province.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the contest on July 23, Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam noted the necessity to nurture young talents as biology and other life sciences would have an increasingly important role in the future.

The Olympiad was a meaningful event to serve that purpose, added Deputy PM Dam, while expressing hope that the contestants would come back to Vietnam as teachers, scientists or leaders in the future.

Vietnam first took part in an international biology Olympiad in 1996 and has won a total of two gold, 11 silver and 47 bronze medals, according to Professor Nguyen Van Minh, head of the 27th IBO organising board.

This year’s biology Olympiad, which took place from July 17-23, drew the participation of 247 students from 65 countries and territories.

In recent years, Vietnam has played host to many academic Olympiads such as the Asian Physics Olympiad in 2004, the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2007, the International Physics Olympiad in 2008 and the International Chemistry Olympiad in 2014.
