The number of professors and associate professors in Vietnam has been on the sharp rise over recent years.

The State Council for Professor Title has just announced the list of professors and associate professors recognised in 2017.

According to the council, last year, 1,226 people were recognised to have the title of professor and associate professor, up 1.75 times and 2.34 times against 2016 and 2015 respectively. Of the figure, 85 people are professors.

Vietnam’s youngest professor in 2017 was Pham Hoang Hiep, 35, from Maths Institute under the Vietnam Academy of Science And Technology. Meanwhile, the youngest associate professor is Do Duc Thuan, 32, from Hanoi University of Technology.

The council’s statistics indicated that during the 1980-2016 period, Vietnam had 1,715 professors and 9,059 associate professors.

Speaking to DTiNews, general secretary of the council Professor Tran Van Nhung explained about the rise. He said that the deadline for receiving candidates’ dossiers for being recognised to be professors and associated professors was extended for six months. So, they had more time to prepare for their works and research.

However, this year, the regulations for the recognition of professors and associate professors will be changed, so that many people tried to have their titles recognised.

Nhung added that the quality of professors and associate professors in 2017 was better than previous years with the higher number articles on ISI/Scopus. Their English skills seem to be better as many of them studied in foreign countries.

The number of female professors and associate professors was higher than previous years, accounting for 28-29% of the total.
