Luc Thi Ly, 31, was recently assigned to teach at a branch of Na Kieng Nursery School in Lung Kim Village, Quang Uyen District.

Ly, who is married with a four-year-old child, said that her husband’s family is around 100 kilometres from the school, and 200 kilometres from her parents’ house.

“Every day, she has to walk for five kilometres to go to work. I recently fell due to the slippery path. I’m still in pain. Even for locals it's a challenging track. So, for me, this is even harder,” Ly said. 

A temporary bridge

Na Kieng Nursery School in Lung Kim Village is in very poor condition with timber temporary classrooms. There is also no electricity, water or even a phone signal. Houses for teachers have not yet been built, so, Ly has to stay in a rundown room near the classrooms. She is the only teacher whose home is too far from the school.

She plans to return home once a month and once every two or three months during the rainy season. Being a new teacher, Ly is quite shocked at what she has seen at the school, but she loves her job.

This is the same situation as many other schools in mountainous areas in Vietnam.
