Children in remote areas in need of better meals
Teachers in the central highlands province of Dak Nong are calling for financial support to help improve nutrition among pupils.
Trieu Thi Phuong, a ninth grader, lives 20km from school. Her parents give her rice and dried fish for the whole week but it is often not enough and she is always hungry as weekends arrive.
Nguyen Quang Trung, a teacher at Quang Hoa Secondary School, said the children had to cook the meals themselves using a wood stove. "I once saw them cooking mice meat and other times, they cooked rice but there was nothing else," he said.
After seeing the children's meals, the teachers at Quang Hoa Secondary School and Be Van Dan Primary School have called on the community for help to provide free meals for the children who are mostly from H'Mong ethnic group.
Trung said, "I shared their situation on Facebook, hoping to get help from friends in Binh Duong and HCM City. We also got support from several restaurants."
"Providing full meals to the children is what will help to keep them studying," she said.
In 2017-2018 school year, the kitchen opened 16 times. The teachers hope to get more support so that they can open the kitchen on a daily basis.

Sam Thi Dung, deputy head of Be Van Dan Primary School said they could only open the kitchen once a week on Monday or Friday for 130 children and the first meals had been warmly welcomed by the children.
