Ministry vows to strictly deal with Hoa Binh exam scandal
The Ministry of Education and Training said that they would strictly deal with the officials and students who altered the results for 2018 high school graduation and university entrance exams.
Three officials have been prosecuted including Nguyen Quang Vinh, former head of the Division of Examination and Quality Management under Hoa Binh Department of Education and Training, Do Manh Tuan, former deputy director of Lac Thuy District Secondary School and Lac Thuy Boarding High School, and Nguyen Khac Tuan, employee at the Division of Examination and Quality Management.
Mai Van Trinh, head of the Authority of Examination and Quality Management under the Ministry of Education and Training, said the students would be strictly dealt with in accordance with the exam rules. The ministry has established a council to re-score the tests. The final results would replace the fraudulent scores for use in high school graduation and university entrance exams. Hoa Binh Department of Education and Training was asked to post the results on online and send the results to the students by March 20.
The Banking Academy and Hanoi University of Science and Technology confirmed that students involved in the case would be punished. In principle, the students will be kicked out of the university. Both the Department of Schools under the Ministry of Defence and the Department of Training under the Ministry of Public Security said that they were reviewing their students and they would not recognise the modified test results.
Many students who have high scores in Hoa Binh have not started the admission procedures into the desired universities after the cheating scandal was exposed. Some of them are valedictorians at police and military universities.
When asked about whether the universities would enrol students with the next best scores because the cheating students had taken away the opportunities of other students, representatives of many universities said they had to await directives from the Ministry of Education and Training.
Mai Van Trinh said they would issue directives on exam regulations and enrolment regulations.
