Teams descend on Hanoi Open Mathematics Competition 2019

Hanoi Open Mathematics Competition 2019 (HOMC) opened in the capital of Vietnam on April 3, drawing the participation of more than 600 Vietnamese and foreign students.


Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chu Xuan Dung, director of Hanoi’s Department of Education and Training, noted how the competition is expected to promote mathematics to Vietnamese young people as well as finding domestic talent in the field.

The mathematics competition has attracted a total of 14 teams, in addition to the Vietnamese team, there are also 13 teams from the rest of the world. The foreign teams are from Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Nepal, the Philippines, Hungary, Iran, Myanmar, Poland, Spain, Taiwan (China), Thailand, and the UAE.

Students are to be divided into two categories: Junior, which is for secondary school students, and Senior, which is for high school students.

Group A will be made entirely out of foreign teams, including 78 students in the Junior category and 68 students in the Senior category.

Group B is where the students from 24 provinces of Vietnam will compete. They will be alongside a total of 262 students in the Junior category and 249 students in the Senior category.

The competition will run until April 5. It has been co-organised by Hanoi’s Department of Education and Training and the Hanoi Mathematical Society.

This will be the 16th time Hanoi has hosted the mathematics competition and is only the second time that foreign teams have registered for the competition.
