According to the ministry, the threat of coronavirus has remained problematic, so authorities of localities need to consider allowing students to stay at home until the end of February if necessary.

Based on the actual situation in each locality, the ministry may take into account extending the school year and will issue specific guidance to ensure students don’t suffer academically.

Many localities, including Hanoi, have decided to close local schools until February 23. Meanwhile, HCM City has announced it would allow local schools to remain shut until the end of February.

Minister of Education and Training Phung Xuan Nha said that the Ministry of Education and Training has prepared scenarios to respond to the epidemic, including the extension of the school year.

The long temporary school shutdown would cause difficulties but safety must be the top priority, Nha highlighted.

Speaking at meeting with the National Steering Board for Prevention and Control of COVID-19 held yesterday on February 14, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam said that if parents and students were still worried, provincial and city authorities should keep schools closed. Classroom safety would be assessed by health experts.

Many schools in Vietnam are applying a wide range of teaching methods to help their students learn online during the school closure. Not only schools in cities, but also those in rural areas are following the suit.

Every day, teachers at Nguyen Viet Xuan Secondary and High School in the southern central province of Phu Yen teach online from 9-10:30 am and 2:30-4 pm for their students.
