Widowed woman and her daughter struggle with incurable disease

A widowed woman in Ben Tre Province now has to support a paralyzed mother and a small daughter suffering from Beta Thalassaemia when she herself also has the disease.

Young girl help her mother to take care of the granmother

Le Thi Quynh Thoa in Quoi Son Commune, Chau Thanh District is now in despair as she has just been diagnosed with Beta Thalassaemia, the same disease as her daughter, Tran Thi Nuong, now in the first grade. The little girl has suffered from disease since she was born.

According to doctors, the disease is incurable and requires frequent blood transfusions.

Mrs. Thoa said that despite her bad health, her daughter insisted on going to school. She and her husband worked extra hours to be able to afford her blood transfusions.

Early in 2012, when the mother suffered fatigue and fainting spells, Mrs. Thoa went to hospital for a regular check-up and was also diagnosed with Beta Thalassaemia.

Since then, she and her daughter have come to the same hospital for blood transfusions every two weeks. The procedure costs them more than VND2 million (USD100) each visit, not including travel fees. Due to her worsening health condition, she was forced to give up her work, and now stays at home to weave bamboo baskets. The modest income from this enterprise is not enough to cover daily expenses.

To make matters worse, the husband, Tran Van Vu, tested positive for liver cancer last year. As a result, Mrs Hoa had to mortgage her home in order to get the VND100 million to pay for his treatment. After the six-month treatment Vu passed away, leaving her with a paralyzed mother and an incurably ill daughter.

Despite her bad health, the little girl insisted on going to school and wants to become a doctor in the future

“I feel deeply pained to see my daughter become pale each time she is in need of a blood transfusion. Honestly, I don’t care about myself , just worry about my daughter’s health,” Thoa said.

The vice chairman of Quoi Son Commune, Tran Minh Duc said, “The locality has mobilised support from different local agencies to help Mrs. Thoa’s family. But the amount of money is still not sufficient to cover what they are coping with. I hope that this article in DTiNews will increase support for this family in need."
